Ill Manors Film Research

I'II Manors Film Research ( case study )

Research all the Institutions involved in the production of Ill Manors. List them with a summary of what their contribution to the film was.

Prior writing the script for Ill Manors. The script for Ill Manors was partly based on actual events and stories Drew heard when he was young, such as a woman prostituting herself in order to repay a drug dealer. The film had been in development for three years prior to filming, however Drew struggled to secure finance for his film. ll Manors was greenlit for production in 2009 as part of the Film London Microwave scheme. it had to be financed by the Film london, BBC film and supported by Skillset, The UK film council and the mayor london.

For the film, Drew hired a mixture of both experienced and inexperienced actors, whilst several cast members already knew the director personally before they were cast in their roles.
Riz Ahmed, who had previously recorded "Shifty" with Plan B, requested himself to play the lead role Aaron after reading the script.

The main casting process for the film took place during August 2010 with several cast members being young unknown actors from the
East End of London,  such as Ryan De La Cruz who was discovered when the crew visited Rokeby School in Canning Town, London. Principal photography began on 1 September 2010 at 3 Mills Studios, London and filming lasted for four weeks on location in London, England.  During production of the film, it was reported that the cast and crew ran into trouble with youths in Forest Gate, London and production was interrupted whilst a laptop containing the film's dailies had to be recovered after being stolen by a drug addict.

Drew claimed that he faced prejudice from some crew members whilst on set, however he also noted that "there was some people that really believed in my vision and gave me all the support I needed.

Editing of the film began in December 2010, however post-production of the film was delayed due to Plan B performing on
The Defamation of Strickland Banks Tour during 2010 and 2011.

In order to raise funds for the completion of the film's post-production, the distribution rights to Ill Manors were sold to
Revolver Entertainment in April 2011 and Plan B delayed the release date of his planned third studio album The Ballad of Belmarsh until after Ill Manors was released.
How much Ill Manors cost to produce (its budget)

It had a small Budget of  £100,000 but made nearly 5 times this at the UK box office .

How was Ill Manors funded?

The Film was funded by Creative Skillset- Creative Skillset’s contribution to the scheme’s crucial training, mentoring and talent development is key to ensuring that the film makers have the right support and guidance to achieve this.

What is the target audience for Ill Manors?

The movie shows everyday life and struggle of London’s teenagers. The movie is aimed at mostly at teenage/ adults aged 18-25 and for both british and american group of people, that like to watch movies that reflect every day issues. Working class is more likely to watch this type of movie because it represents a “normal” life. The reason for that is I watched the movie and from what I observed the movie is aimed at these groups of people, because its more of an boyish movie that has some violence and a lot of strong language and some sex scenes. From the psychographic point of view I think that the movie is aimed a these groups:

Mainstreamers-because it is a everyday movie and everyone could afford to go and see it and relate to it
Explorers-because this movie is different than any other films it offers more drama and more action than a standard British film.
Reformers-because these people are open minded, they like to explore new things.
Media consumption point of view is fairly simple this movie is mainly aimed at teenagers, and if you research the internet you will find that it was mostly teenagers that went to see the movie because of all the hype surrounding it. This movie was also certified as a 15 so it was possible for young people to go
.

Who is the main distributor of Ill Manors?

Its advertising ( distribution) campaign had to be targeted at specific niche audiences: check whether adverts appeared on digital radio stations kiss FM, digital satellite channel dave, comedy central, and the sun/ news of the world.

The main two distributors of ILL Manors was ....
  • Revolver Entertainment
  • Benelux Film Distributors

  • How was Ill Manors promoted?

Viral marketing helped III Manors make money, overcoming the mass American Film industry For example, their website gave the audience easy access to information about the film, was packed with music video clips, Trailers and pictures and downloads which makes the audience feel more involved in the film.

The downloads are a way of free advertising, for example if someone has the background on their phone or on ring tone, friends might ask where it was from and it would help spread information about the film through word of mouth.

Compare this with a big budget blockbuster. What are the main similarities and differences?

III Manors Film is a low budget film meaning that is doesn't have the high-quality of equipment compared to a big budget blockbuster such as Inception. This is because, of course, the budget of the film is low, they need more funding to produce a high-quality film.

A big budget film would have more well known actors, a lot more high-quality action and would have the best people they could find to help produce the film (who are also very well known and expensive to work with).

Similarities would be that both budget films would be able to produce something targeted to a large audience and could possibly have similar audiences.

How does the trailer for Ill Manors hook audiences into the narrative and pose questions that the film will answer? Identify 3 ways/techniques.

Enigma-  throughout the trailer there is a slight enigma, the audience don't get the full picture of what is going on and are therefore pulled into the film, the audience get a glimpse of the film but aren't really told about the whole story, very few clues are given to the audience about the whole story and that could make them want to find out more.

Identity - the audience can feel a sense of identity with the main character, the protagonist, they see him topless in the bathroom , where he lives and the way his life is and they could possibly relate to that and are therefore are hooked onto the film and wanting to see how the protagonist deals with his way of life.

The drama - the audience see a lot of drama and tension in the trailer between the protagonist and several others, this may pull them in to watching the film if drama interests them, it also creates an enigma, the audience will be wondering why this male and female characters from the state acts the way they are.

How does the trailer for Ill Manors balance plot and spectacle?

It's memorable as the way the trailer is shown. By the effective use of lighting it's shown contrastively and grabs the audiences conception. The things he says, his actions is unforgettable and predictable as in society today this is what typical teenagers say and do. This  frames the story-line more as we see different aspects which gets us thinking.

Think about the certificate of Ill Manors (18 certificate). Research film certification and outline what is deemed acceptable for this certificate. What is the difference between a 15 certificate and an 18 certificate?

An excellent film showing the social underclass at work and play in East London. It is very depressing as there seems to be a non stop treadmill of individuals with no hope or expectations.
15 rated certificate allow moderate violence, gore and sexual activity but not too frequent and must be relevant. Drug taking is not banned but should not be promoted. A few cuts to get a 15 may have been a better idea to get a good story across to a much wider audience.
An 18 rated certificate allows gore, violence, sexual activity and drug taking as long as the film does not promote these things. Excellently acted the despair is heart breaking. A story that needs a wider audience. Sadly I fear that the people who need to see it won't be able to do so becuase of the 18 cert.
