Music reviewers' response?

It took me a while to get on board with the idea of watching Ill Manors, only finally being convinced after hearing a host of very strong reviews. Ben Drew’s debut behind the camera turns out to be a very smart and assured take on the whole London gang thing, not avoiding all the clichés but handling them well when doing so.
East London was my home for the first 30 years of my life so I easily identify with the area, culture and ideologies of the kids in the region yet I am always very cautious of films talking about the problems of living in and around a council estate. In fact, I haven’t even sat down to watch Kidult or Adulthood as I’m not sure I can deal with the ‘blud’ and ‘YaGetMe’ overload.
As Plan B, Ben Drew has carved out a very successful music career, at first skimming the edges of the charts with his debut album before changing tack two years ago and crooning his way into the top ten, most notably with She Said. Ill Manors is a concept piece combining  stories set inDrew’s home borough Forest Gate, with songs based on each of the characters, using his raps to visualise their backgrounds.

Media Form: what Techniques does the video use to establish the setting and to engage the audience?

The techniques this music video uses in order to establish the setting and engage the audience is by the use of mise-en-scene. Firstly, Customes; The way the characters were dressed in this music video told us about the lifetyle and location that group were living in. Secondly the Editing: This music video is a typical video track with iconography of a typical music video. The video expands upon the themes of the song, and uses footage from the 2011 riots in London in this music video, the way they have edited the music video gives the audience different message from the one we all got on BBC news about teenages and also challanges this sterotype through editing informing adults that teenagers are not all criminals and violent. Furthermore, this music clip is also stereotyping teenagers these days, as we all know society thinks teenagers are the reason why people can't feel safe when their out because of the trouble teenagers commit on the street, however Plan B makes it clear in his music video that not all teenagers are the same and not all of them take drugs and cause trouble and not all of them who lives in council estate with single parents are threats to society. ' oi look there's a chav, that means council housed and violent '  This is a typical stereotypical line from the music video due to the fact that nearly everyone thinks in the same way, everyone thinks that people who live in council estates means violence, drugs and crime, however this isnt always the case.

Moreover, the lyrics are effective in this music clip, this is because the lyrics link to the life we live in today and links to the thoughts and ideas society has today. One part of the lyrics which i think is very effective is ' oi , i said oi , what you looking at you little rich boy'.  This is very effective as plan B is referring to the rich people, politicians Also the lyric  'hug the hoodie' which challange this sterotype, who are unware of  ( David Cameron etc ).  Thridly, the sound: This music video a has a good pace for teenage audiences this is because the beat is up to the teenagers standards, the beat is fast which makes the teenage audience engage into the music video and build tension. Lastly, the camera work:

Media Representation: how is gender, ethnicity, age represented in the video?

This music video is dominan representation ; teenagers are represented to be crinimals and violent which reinforce sterotypes also preffered reading which say maybe we should challange the past. In addition, the gender which is being portrayed are boys/teenage boys. This is to emphasize that teenage boys are the trouble makers which commit violence and crime. The media prresentation of teenagers in society today is usually exaggerated in the media, which is known as moral panic. Moreover, ethnicity is represented in the video by portraying a mix of white and black people, this is to show that they are the main ethnicity who gets involved in violence and crime. In the video there is no other ethnic groups such as Asian's this is to portray to the audience that they are not usually part of this violence. Furthermore, there is only a shot of one girl who's holding a lighter in her hand which could portray that some girls are like this which goes against the politicians expectations but it's mostly teenage boys and the age which is represented in this video clip are teenagers, varies from the age 10 to 18.

Media institution: in what ways is the video typical of music videos and what values does it promote?

This music clip is a hip hop protest song, to show society's thoughts about teenage crime and violence. Plan B is anti-government as he doesn't believe what government is doing is right, and also believes that the government themselves think that there is a lot of  teenage crime and violence. More than that there is the theme of ' counter hegemonic' , these are groups of people who do not start off as radical or extremist groups; they encourage people to share their view against hegemony through the use of propaganda whilst raising awareness. This is used in the music clip as Plan B tries to send his point across through propaganda/ music clip/ song. As the music is build up with different types of shots ( sharpe and quick) with the main character singing and preforming, this makes the music video very typical and similar to the rest of the industry as it also has a narrative to it.

Media Audience : who does this text/ artist appeal to and why?

The psycographic group that this music track would mostly be for strugglers- as they want to escape and are more likely to be physically agressive, Also be in the psychographic group explorers - as they enjoy/like taking risks and take part in dangers activities. The socio economic group they would be in is D-E. They are people that are primarily  unskilled workers and and most half little education. unlike the C who have school leaving degree. I think that this Text/artist appeals to everyone at any age, in my opinion, this music video  would be aimed mostly at educated/high status adults which  they are aware of society's thoughts and idea's against teenagers, also so it could raise awareness.
